A feature designed to disappear after you view it is now creating a very visible regulatory problem for Meta.
Britain’s communications regulator Ofcom has opened a formal investigation into whether Meta properly assessed the risks of Instagram Instants before launch.
The focus includes illegal content and potential harms to children. Meta says it conducted the required analysis and built protections into the feature.
No violation has been established. But the investigation matters because it tests a bigger regulatory idea: whether safety reviews have to happen before a social-media product ships, rather than after a problem becomes public.
Should social platforms have to prove major new features are safe before they reach millions of users?
