The federal government is officially changing the language it uses for one of the most important technologies of the decade.

An executive order signed by President Donald Trump directs the executive branch, to the maximum extent permitted by law, to use the terms “Super Intelligence” and “SI” instead of “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI.”

The order also calls for proposed legislative language creating a federal definition of the new terminology.

Supporters will see the move as an attempt to frame advanced systems as a strategic national technology. Critics will ask whether a terminology change does anything to address the difficult questions surrounding safety, employment, infrastructure, competition and power.

Either way, the change signals how seriously Washington wants to frame the next phase of machine intelligence.

THE QUESTION

Is 'Super Intelligence' a useful distinction — or a political rebrand of AI?
